Abdominal Breathing

We were born breathing from the abdomen, but as we become increasingly stressed in out lives, we stop breathing so deeply, and start to use the upper parts of the lungs. There are fewer alveoli in the upper part of the lungs, (these are the parts of the lungs that absorb the oxygen from the air), and therefore we have to breathe faster in order to take in the same amount of oxygen that we need. The body therefore starts to work harder, which doesn’t help our stress levels, and can even exacerbate them. As we breathe faster and more rapidly, our sympathetic (fight & flight) nervous system is triggered, which makes us breathe even faster…. a vicious circle is created. So good breathing is a basic essential!
